This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Alice Shaddle: Fuller Circles, presented at the Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago, March 23 – June 16, 2024. The exhibition introduces Alice Shaddle's (1928–2017) enduring work to new audiences in Chicago, where she practiced for over 60 years. Featuring a range of media, it highlights her inventive paper manipulations, from early papier-mâché bas reliefs to shadow boxes, layered collages, immersive installations, and cut-paper mosaic compositions. Archival materials, including handmade notecards to her close friend and fellow artist Katheryn Kucera, showcase Shaddle’s humor and creative process.
Developed in close collaboration with the artist's family, the catalogue includes contributions from various writers, exploring Shaddle's life and work within Chicago’s dynamic art scene from the 1960s to the 2000s. It also delves into her long association with Artemisia Gallery and her life in the George Blossom House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed residence in Hyde Park, where she lived for over fifty years.
