Learning Together: A Compendium is the result of a collaboration between UIC Gallery 400 and the 2024 UIC BFA Art Education senior cohort. Each fall, UIC Art Education seniors develop unit plans—comprehensive instructional approaches to a central theme—along with specific lesson plans. In fall 2023, Clinical Assistant Professor William Estrada incorporated the Learning Together: Art Education and Community oral-history archive into the curriculum, assigning students to interpret and build unit plans based on those interviews.
This compendium, designed as a resource for artists, educators, and facilitators working with young adults in and beyond classroom settings, features nine student-created unit plans. Topics range from archiving community histories and creating photography flipbooks to exploring neighborhood resources through postcards. Each plan outlines lesson objectives, essential questions, artist references, vocabulary, and materials for various grade levels.
Learning Together: A Compendium showcases unit plans developed by the 2024 University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) BFA Art Education senior cohort, inspired by oral histories from the Learning Together: Art Education and Community exhibition project at UIC’s Gallery 400. Designed as a resource for educators, artists, and facilitators working with youth, the compendium offers creative, community-based lesson plans exploring themes like local history, neighborhood storytelling, and collective memory.
