Uthman Olowa
Presented as part of Red Line Services’ Designing Belonging series, this Lunch & Learn program features a talk by Uthman Olowa, the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) Teaching Fellow, Architecture, Interior Architecture & Designed Objects, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Olawa discusses design principles driven by the reality that architecture is always a reflection of the systems, beliefs, and values of our society. This talk explores the ways in which systemic inequalities of race, class, and accessibility are made tangible through architecture, and how we can conceive a healthier, fairer approach to using design as a tool.
Uthman Olowa is an educator, artist, and urbanist who has worked with several non-profit education organizations with shared missions to serve students of color. He is committed to serving youth by revitalizing Black communities through the medium of architecture.
Lunch is shared after the program. Free and open to the public. RSVP is required.
Designing Belonging is an eight-month public lecture series, followed by intensive design + research workshops, that engage houseless artists in the reimaging of Chicago’s public spaces.
