Join Sin Cinta Previa, a Latin(a)x and Queer archive video series, for the premiere of the short documentary film, Street Signs: Murals in Chicago. Shot from 1988-1991, the unfinished film captures the powerful awareness of history and community identity evident in public murals of the era.
Although many of the murals have been lost to gentrification, they are remembered by countless Latinx community members who lived in the city during those years. Street Signs features murals in the neighborhoods of Humboldt Park, Little Village, Logan Square, and Pilsen from the 1980s to 1990s. The film includes interviews with muralists Sandra Antongiorgi and Jose Guerrero, Dr. Olga Nuño, and photographer Ivan Justiniano, with narration by Ilya Adler.
The filmmakers and Chicago-based muralist Sandra Antongiorgi join moderator Jose Luis Benavides to discuss the making of the film, share insights into this rare glimpse of Chicago’s Latinx community and mural art history, and reveal how their remarkable film ended up unfinished and unseen until now.
Through this film screening, panel discussion, and intercultural and intergenerational dialogue, Sin Cinta Previa invites community members, muralists, and the public to share their memories, experiences, and connections to these murals.
