Jazz Performance by “Early Summer”

February 19, 2025 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

A group of young musicians stands on a balcony, several holding instruments.
Early Summer

Join University of Chicago’s student jazz group Early Summer for a musical performance embedded in South Side artist, designer, and educator Robert Earl Paige’s installation, Give the Drummer Some!, at the Smart Museum of Art. Free, register at the link below. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Originally named after a tune popularized by the Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui, Early Summer is a Jazz Octet based out of the University of Chicago. The group’s repertoire ranges from classic standards to music from contemporary composers (Kenny Garrett, Walter Smith III, etc.), all arranged by members of the band. Contributing to the greater Hyde Park jazz scene is of great importance to the group—guitarist Seamus runs a jam session at the university that welcomes in students and faculty alike, and the group has put together events for the public radio station WHPK.
