Weaving Stories is a series of community-building weaving workshops meant to connect our shared stories of heritage and culture to material practice. Taking place at Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, and Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in the coming months, the series invites participants to learn how to use a hand loom and contribute found materials to a collective weaving project on a standing loom. Participants are encouraged to bring non-wool materials from home, such as fabric scraps, fibers, ribbons, twigs, etc.

The third session in the series, taking place at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, is led by artist Rebecca Riley-Vargas. Participants will have a chance to create a sash or bookmark through hands-on experience. The Women’s Guild Folk Art Room will also be open, showcasing textiles that reflect traditional folk art practices, and offering a focused presentation on cultural narratives through textiles. Attendees will also get to explore the Balzekas Museum’s most recent exhibition,  beLONGING: Lithuanian Artists in Chicago 1900 to Now .

Weaving Stories is presented as part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities.

This series is free, family-friendly, for all ages, and open to the public. Materials and refreshments are provided. Please RSVP
