Dunning

November 8, 2024 - December 31, 2024

On a gradient brown to grey background from top to bottom, a collage of drawn and photographed images are positioned above it. There is a pink hankerchief in the foreground, a grey baseball cap below it, a drawn grey tube, and a red wood-textured structure.
Photo and artwork by Michael Michelski.

Dunning explores the history of Cook County’s insane asylum through the works of 10 visual artists and 10 poets. The asylum and psychiatric traditions of the past would have incarcerated these artists for a variety of reasons, including identifying as queer and/or trans and being Black or Indigenous.

The exhibition exemplifies the types of culture we lose when our only solution to divergent philosophies is lifelong incarceration. Join the Center for Mad Culture for this unique glimpse at Chicago’s past and future.

Participating artists and poets include: Stephanie Heit, Robert Ives, Gabrielle Jensen, Charlie Nutley, Edwin Parker, Salem Hue Penny, Evan Reynolds, Titus Wonsey, Joy Young, Cam Collins, Lily Cozzens, Melissa Kreider, Michael Michalski, Bri Noonan, Genevieve Ramos, Megan Sterling, Joshua With, and Keira Wood.

The Center is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 am-5:00 pm, or by appointment.

Dunning is supported by Hyde Park Art Center’s Artists Run Chicago Fund as part of Art Design Chicago.
