Mapping Indigenous Chicago

October 17, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

An image of a map. Text at top right says: Indian Trails and Villages of Chicago and Cook, DuPage, and Will Counties, Ills. (1804) as shown by weapons and implements of the stone-age.
An archeological map of Chicago and vicinity, detached from Milo M. Quaife, Chicago’s Highways, Old and New. By Albert F. Scharf. Chicago: D. F. Keller & Co., 1923. Chicago Region Map Collection.

Take a deep dive into the process of creating the many multifaceted and interactive maps for the Newberry’s Indigenous Chicago project with scholars who helped to conceptualize and build them.

This talk includes an introduction to several of the all-new interactive maps created for Indigenous Chicago. Scholars involved in development of the maps speak to the maps they worked on and discuss the challenges they faced in deciding how to represent various cultural aspects.

This program is held virtually on Zoom.
