As a part of programming for the exhibition Radical Craft: Arts Education at Hull-House 1889-1935, the Hull-House Museum is partnering with The WasteShed to present a three-part event series, “Radical Mending.” The second installment in the series is “Sewing Stories,” a workshop centered around the creation of a textile tapestry to share personal stories. Sewing and repairing garments communally can invite stories about community, triumph, and traditions lost or kept, and can inspire feelings of hope. For this workshop, visitors are encouraged to bring a textile object of significance to contribute to a collective tapestry.
The goal of these workshops is to foster space for connection, to encourage sustainable everyday practices, and to educate one another in the history of the garment industry both past and present. Visitors can join any workshop, but those new to the craft are strongly encouraged to attend “Mending Basics.” This series takes place in the Residents’ Dining Hall at the Hull-House Museum. The cost of admission is $22 and includes materials and a meal.
