The BLACK Domestic Dining Roomscape – Meal Time

May 31, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

"...just the craziest fucking thing I...," Artist: Shonna Pryor.  Photo by Shonna Pryor.

As part of  Indelible ORIGINS | Place + People The BLACK Domestic Living & Dining Roomscapes, the GREYSTONE Collective presents Meal Time, a performance installation activated by guest artist Shonna Pryor.

A space to celebrate the ritual of “breaking bread,” the Black domestic dining room is where family gathers to nourish mind, body, and spirit. Pryor invites guests to experience her signature tablecloth object muse. The spreading of tablecloths provides a seat at the table for rest, safety, nutrition, and togetherness. As in traditional dinner gatherings in the African American home, conversations evolve around wellness of body, mind, and spirit.

The GREYSTONE Collective is an established home and studio for Black Queer + Trans Makers located in the heart of Bronzeville, Chicago’s landmark Black Metropolis. Indelible ORIGINS | Place + People is a four-part public engagement series that celebrates the identity and creative narratives of GREYSTONE Collective’s artists, makers, and guest collaborators while creating ancestral ties to the neighborhood’s historical Black makers—Ida B. Wells, Richard Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Margaret Burroughs.

Indelible ORIGINS | Place + People is supported by Hyde Park Art Center’s Artists Run Chicago Fund as part of Art Design Chicago.

A meal is shared at the program. Free and open to the public. RSVP is required, space limited.
