Walk: Encounters with Balbo in Chicago

September 5, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

A collage of three black and white photos, one of a sculpture, one of an architectural detail, and one of a couple in 1930s dress standing and looking upward.
Dawit L. Petros, A Constant Re-telling of the Future in the Past (Part 3), Archival pigment print, 81.5 x 183cm (32 x 72 in), Work in Progress, 2021-2023.

Join architectural historian Onur Öztürk and exhibiting artist Dawit L. Petros for a walk from the Balbo Monument past Columbus and Balbo Drives to the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Along the way, Öztürk and Petros will discuss the legacy of General Italo Balbo and Italian aviation at the 1933–34 Chicago World’s Fair, and how celebrating Italian technological advancement in Chicago helped to obscure the country’s violent colonial project in the Horn of Africa.

This event is presented in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Photography’s exhibition, Dawit L. Petros: Prospetto a Mare. The exhibition opening reception follows the walk.

Meet at the Balbo Monument near 1410 S. Special Olympics Dr., on the bike path just east of Soldier Field.
