Tapping into our Common Humanity for Good Design

February 29, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Nootan Bharani

Presented as part of Red Line Services’ Designing Belonging series, this Lunch & Learn program features a talk by Nootan Bharani, architect and Associate Director of Cultural Stewardship and University Partnerships at Arts + Public Life, and a lecturer in the Humanities Division at the University of Chicago. Presenting the Arts Lawn as a case study, Nootan discusses the process of establishing values grounding a project’s design and the intentionality of creating specific elements within a space to telegraph those values. Operated and managed by Arts + Public Life, the Arts Lawn is the latest phase of the Arts Block, a vibrant collection of cultural and commercial spaces on historic Garfield Boulevard in Washington Park.

Nootan Bharani is a fierce champion of the continuum of communities. As an architect and maker with a deep background in environmental sustainability, she gravitates in her work toward existing buildings and in-between spaces. She has spent most of her career in non-traditional practice, working directly with neighborhood partners on projects on a wide variety of scales. Nootan is a thoughtful leader of processes to shape places where people want to be.

A meal is shared after the program. Free and open to the public. RSVP is required.

Designing Belonging is an eight-month public lecture series, followed by intensive design + research workshops, that engage houseless artists in the reimaging of Chicago’s public spaces.
