Although its colors and styling have recently been refreshed, the Art Design Chicago logo has a long history. Developed in 2017 by James Goggin, Lead Designer and Owner of Practise, the logo references Chicago’s history as an important producer of typography and stencils. Materials from the Newberry Library’s collection served as inspiration for Goggin as he created a visual identity for the initiative—grounded in the city’s design tradition and representative of the stories that Art Design Chicago tells.
“In the same way that the overall initiative is telling a story about Chicago art and design, I felt very strongly that the [design] identity should also play that role.”—designer James Goggin
