On a recent broadcast of WVON’s midday show, Kimberley Egonmwan spoke to artist Juarez Hawkins and Art Design Chicago Project Director Eva Silverman about the current exhibitions and events happening on the South Side of Chicago, including South Side Community Art Center’s exhibition ReSOURCE: Art and Resourcefulness in Black Chicago.

When asked where people can find Art Design Chicago exhibitions and events, ADC Project Director Eva Silverman mentioned the South Side Community Art Center’s exhibition and added, “we also have activities at the Hyde Park Art Center and at the Stoney Island Arts Bank in Greater Grand Crossing. In any quadrant of the city, you can find something related to Art Design Chicago.” 

Juarez Hawkins, the engagement fellow for the ReSOURCE exhibition, elaborated on the legacy of the South Side Community Arts Center and the importance of community engagement to the development and implementation of the exhibition. “The South Side Community Arts Center has a fantastic legacy…many famous names have come through there…Basically, I like to think of myself as the hype woman. I am coordinating the efforts of several community partners.” ReSOURCE brings together 40 artists and 70 artworks (including 4 projects commissioned for the exhibition) in partnership with local community gardens and urban farms to tell this story. 

ReSOURCE: Art and Resourcefulness in Black Chicago is on view at the South Side Community Art Center through December 21, 2024.
